Consumo excesivo de azúcar en niños de cuatro y cinco años de la escuela bilingüe Unidocente “Intiñan”

Introduction: diet, intraoral bacteria, the composition of saliva and the capacity of teeth to remineralize are key factors for the appearance of dental caries.Objective: to determine how the consumption of sugar in children causes the appearance of dental caries in children between four and five years of age at the "Intiñan" Bilingual One-teacher School.Methods: observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, descriptive research, using the survey technique and tabulation of results. It was carried out in the community of Sanjaloma Alto in the province of Tungurahua, in the Unidocente Bilingual School ¨IntiÑan¨. The total population was 37 students between four and five years of age, of which 10 children between four and five years of age were taken as a sample, to evaluate the number of children suffering from dental caries and how common was the consumption of sugar in their homes.Results: 50 % of the parents consume white sugar at home and the remaining 50 % state that they consume brown sugar. Ninety percent of the parents believe that they could change their children's eating habits to improve their oral and general health, while 10 % expressed difficulty in making the change.Conclusions: it is essential to take care of the oral cavity from the initial ages of life, working from home and school in the promotion of health and prevention of diseases involving the oral cavity for all the subsequent consequences during adulthood.Introducción: la dieta, las bacterias intraorales, la composición de la saliva, la capacidad de remineralización de los dientes son factores clave para la aparición de caries dental.Objetivo: determinar cómo el consumo de azúcar en niños provoca la aparición de caries dental en niños de cuatro a cinco años de la Escuela Bilingüe Unidocente “Intiñan”. Métodos: investigación observacional, descriptiva de corte transversal, con la técnica de encuesta y tabulación de resultados.Se realizó en la comunidad Sanjaloma Alto de la provincia de Tungurahua, en la Escuela Bilingüe Unidocente ¨IntiÑan¨. El total de la población es de 37 alumnos de entre cuatro a cinco años de los cuales se toma la cantidad de 10 niños de cuatro a cinco años como muestra, para evaluar la cantidad de niños que sufren de caries dental cuan habitual era el consumo de azúcar en sus hogares.Resultados: el 50 % de padres consumen azúcar blanca en su hogar y el 50 % restante manifiesta que consume azúcar morena. El 90 % de los padres de familia creen que podrían cambiar los hábitos alimenticios de su hija/o para mejorar su salud oral y general mientras un 10 % manifiesta una dificultad para realizar el cambio.Conclusiones: es imprescindible el cuidado desde las edades iniciales de la vida el trabajo desde el hogar y la escuela en la promoción de salud y prevención de enfermedades implicando la cavidad bucal por todas las consecuencias posteriores durante las edades adultas
